Sunday 16th May 7am-5pm approximately
Perth 800 - Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia
Pitlochry
The Etape Caledonia is an 81-mile cycle challenge taking place
on traffic-free roads in the stunning scenery of Highland
Perthshire. Etape Caledonia is Britain's first closed road cycle
race open to the general public. It offers the ordinary cyclists
closed roads to cycle on in safety. We are all used to mass
participation running races in the form of marathons and half
marathons, now there is an equivalent for cyclists. Why Etape
Caledonia? Well 'Etape' is the name for a stage as in a stage of
the Tour de France cycle race. Caledonia of course refers to
Scotland, so what better name can you have for this race. There
are some 25 million people who own bicycles in Britain, so why
shouldn’t they have a closed road cycle event where they can
have the roads to themselves. There cannot be anywhere better
than Highland Perthshire to cycle, we assure you that you will
find the scenery along the route absolutely fabulous. The air is
clean, with none of your city high traffic fumes that other
parts of Britain and Europe and the world suffer from. The event
on 16th May 2010 is open to individuals between the ages of 18
and 80. To ensure that the roads are reopened to the schedule
agreed with the authorities, participants will need to maintain
an average speed of 13-14mph around the course. This gives at
least 6h 15mins to reach the finishing line within the closure
window. Even if you are unable to meet this average you can
continue on open roads and complete the full circuit. Admission
- Spectators free, Participants £54 Registration (to be
confirmed) Contact - Etape Caledonia Telephone - 0871 384 9920

Heart of Scotland 100 are organising a long distance walk
The 39th Long Distance Walkers Association 100-mile event will
take place in Scotland for the first time in the history of the
event. The walk starts in Dunkeld, “the fort of the Celts”, a
town that played a key role in early Scottish history.
From Dunkeld the route takes you to Kirkmichael via Loch Ordie
and an old peat road. Leaving Kirkmichael on the Cateran Trail
the path leads to Enochdhu, then a wee bit of road walking and
thence up the glen to Daldhu, Shinagag, and on to Blair Atholl.
From there it is off to Bruar via the Bruar Falls using a
passageway under the A9.
A cycle track leads to Dalnacardoch and on to Loch Errochty
crossing via the dam wall and onto the track that, apart from a
bit heather-bashing, takes you onto the descent to the breakfast
stop at Kinloch Rannoch.
Homeward bound now via the Tempar Bothy, skirting the flank of
mighty Schiehallion and descending to Fortinghall, home of
Europe’s oldest tree.
Around Drummond Hill and then down the riverside path recently
developed by PKCT taking you to the bridge at Aberfeldy. A
forest track eventually leads back to Dunkeld and a well-earned,
possibly traditional, Scottish breakfast and thence to a good
rest before attempting the journey home!
