Kiss Me, Kate
Pitlochry Festival Theatre Pitlochry
Baltimore, 1948: after a string of flops, actor-manager Fred Graham desperately needs his new musical adaptation of The Taming Of The Shrew to be a hit. But while Fred’s opinion of his own talents is sky-high, he knows only one thing can guarantee success: a great, big star. Unfortunately, the only star Fred knows is Lilli Vanessi, legendary diva, Hollywood icon... and his ex-wife. As rehearsals progress, Lilli playing Kate opposite Fred’s Petruchio, each begins to remember, with a passion bordering on the homicidal, just why they got divorced in the first place... Meanwhile, Fred has fallen under the spell of nightclub singer Lois Lane, and has cast her, and her dancing partner, Bill, in the show. But chronic gambler Bill owes a fortune to some heavyweight mobsters. And to escape their clutches, Bill signs a $10,000 IOU – in Fred Graham’s name... On opening night, Fred sends Lois a fabulous bouquet – which mistakenly gets delivered to Lilli. Her heart melting, Lilli’s old feelings for Fred come flooding back... until she discovers that Lois was the intended recipient... just as two goons turn up to collect Bill’s debt – from Fred... Romantic, touching and hilariously funny, with a classic Cole Porter score, Kiss Me, Kate is one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time. Sunday 16th May 7am-5pm approximately
Perth 800 - Macmillan Cancer Support Etape Caledonia
Pitlochry

The Etape Caledonia is an 81-mile cycle challenge taking place on traffic-free roads in the stunning scenery of Highland Perthshire. Etape Caledonia is Britain's first closed road cycle race open to the general public. It offers the ordinary cyclists closed roads to cycle on in safety. We are all used to mass participation running races in the form of marathons and half marathons, now there is an equivalent for cyclists. Why Etape Caledonia? Well 'Etape' is the name for a stage as in a stage of the Tour de France cycle race. Caledonia of course refers to Scotland, so what better name can you have for this race. There are some 25 million people who own bicycles in Britain, so why shouldn’t they have a closed road cycle event where they can have the roads to themselves. There cannot be anywhere better than Highland Perthshire to cycle, we assure you that you will find the scenery along the route absolutely fabulous. The air is clean, with none of your city high traffic fumes that other parts of Britain and Europe and the world suffer from. The event on 16th May 2010 is open to individuals between the ages of 18 and 80. To ensure that the roads are reopened to the schedule agreed with the authorities, participants will need to maintain an average speed of 13-14mph around the course. This gives at least 6h 15mins to reach the finishing line within the closure window. Even if you are unable to meet this average you can continue on open roads and complete the full circuit. Admission - Spectators free, Participants £54 Registration (to be confirmed) Contact - Etape Caledonia Telephone - 0871 384 9920 Email: info@etapecaledonia.co.uk  Web www.etapecaledonia.co.uk

illustrated talk  -
Molteno Hall Fortingall

The James M MacLaren Society invite members and all interested to the annual talk and slide show in Fortingall, to look at the exhibition and pictures of Rosehaugh and then hear Kathleen MacLeman speak about her recollections of this amazing house by William Flockhart, demolished in 1959. The latest Society Journal (which is on sale at The Watermill) featured Flockhart - a colleague of MacLaren - and Rosehaugh. Kathleen was fortunate to have been brought up on the home farm of Rosehaugh Estate close to the mansion house, she was one of the founder members of Avoch Heritage Association and was a co-author of the excellent book "Rosehaugh, a House of the Time". So she can talk about the house she remembers, its demolition and the sale of effects by Love of Perth, and about the Flockhart buildings still on the estate. Perhaps there will a lesson here for the future of Taymouth!

Saturday 29th - 31st May
Heart of Scotland 100 are organising a long distance walk

The 39th Long Distance Walkers Association 100-mile event will take place in Scotland for the first time in the history of the event. The walk starts in Dunkeld, “the fort of the Celts”, a town that played a key role in early Scottish history.
From Dunkeld the route takes you to Kirkmichael via Loch Ordie and an old peat road. Leaving Kirkmichael on the Cateran Trail the path leads to Enochdhu, then a wee bit of road walking and thence up the glen to Daldhu, Shinagag, and on to Blair Atholl. From there it is off to Bruar via the Bruar Falls using a passageway under the A9.
A cycle track leads to Dalnacardoch and on to Loch Errochty crossing via the dam wall and onto the track that, apart from a bit heather-bashing, takes you onto the descent to the breakfast stop at Kinloch Rannoch.
Homeward bound now via the Tempar Bothy, skirting the flank of mighty Schiehallion and descending to Fortinghall, home of Europe’s oldest tree.
Around Drummond Hill and then down the riverside path recently developed by PKCT taking you to the bridge at Aberfeldy. A forest track eventually leads back to Dunkeld and a well-earned, possibly traditional, Scottish breakfast and thence to a good rest before attempting the journey home! http://www.heartofscotland100.org.uk/

Target Park, Blair Castle Blair Atholl

The Atholl Gathering and Atholl Highlanders' Parade takes place on the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May every year. This unrivalled spectacle gives locals and visitors alike the chance to participate in a unique Highland tradition that has persisted for generations. The Atholl Gathering takes place on the Sunday, with the Atholl Highlanders officially opening the Highland Games with a "March On" before His Grace the Duke of Atholl, led again by the skirl of their pipes and the deep, sonorous booming of their drums.  Following the March On, heavyweight strong men from around the world take centre stage to battle it out in the Highland Games, which includes traditional events such as tossing the caber, putting the shot and throwing the hammer. Highland Games date back many centuries, with most of the events tracing their roots back to ancient Scottish battle weapons and fighting techniques.  A tug o' war, races, Highland dancing and solo piping competitions also take place throughout the day, recreating the atmosphere of the original Highland Games, which is what the Highland Gathering is all about.   Trade stands, catering outlets and a beer tent are on site.
