Aberfeldy is situated on the bend of the UK's
largest river, the mighty River Tay and a short
5km from Loch Tay.
There are a fine selection of local shops and restaurants around
the main square, with lots of attractions and activities on the
doorstep.
There are ample
opportunities for walking around the area with the Falls of
Moness and the Birks of Aberfeldy (made famous by Robert Burns)
perhaps the best know
Atholl and Breadalbane Highland Gathering -
Aberfeldy. These are the local Highland Games held in August each year.
They are well worth attending, very much a 'locals' Highland Games
with all kinds of activities and participation from live stock
to the strongman lifting the Menzies bolder. Very well worth
visiting.
All the fun of a true Highland Event, with Piping
competition, Highland Dancing, Track Events, and all the Heavy
Events including the tug of war.
Between the Jacobite wars
of 1715 & 1745 the Military Roads of General Wade reached the
area. In 1733 a
bridge designed and built by William Adam was opened to carry
the road across the
Tay.
Aberfeldy Watermill bookshop and gallery, which
has been sympathetically designed around some
of the original features of the watermill.
Dewar's
World of Whisky at Aberfeldy Distillery (built in 1896)
Dewars world of whisky is just on the outskirts
of the town, with a wonderful interactive visitor centre.
.
At nearby Weem just over
the other side of the Wade's Bridge is historic Castle Menzies
which dates from 1571.
