Highland Perthshire
Highland Perthshire
is the northern most end of Perthshire, it lies north of the
Highland Fault Line, a geographic fault in the earth's surface
that runs from Loch Lomond through Dunkeld and eastwards across
Scotland.
As one travels north of Perth along the A9 one quite suddenly
finds oneself amidst dramatic highland scenery, with high
mountains, deep glens and an abundance of trees as one
approaches Dunkeld and Birnam, you are entering Highland
Perthshire.
Highland Perthshire is a very distinct area of
Scotland and comprises of the towns of:-
The Highland Perthshire is known for its
forests which contain some of the tallest trees in Britain - it
is often called the 'Big Tree Country'.
Wild life abound in Highland Perthshire with a wide variety of
birds from wintering geese and local residents which including
the Golden Eagle, Osprey, Black Grouse and Capercaillie through
to many smaller birds such as Dippers, Tree Creepers, Wood
Peckers, etc.
Highland Perthshire has businesses that
specialise in taking you to see the mammals which include Red
Deer (Britain's largest animal), Roe and Fallow deer, Badgers
and Red Squirrels.
There
are six Highland Games in Highland Perthshire which start on the last Sunday in May
with the
Blair Atholl Gathering which includes the Atholl Highlanders,
the Duke of Atjholls private army. The Duke of Atholl opens the games.
The Atholl Highlanders, who march
on to the games field behind their magnificent pipes and drums
followed with their field gun. a great games to visit.
The final Highland Games in Highland
Perthshire is in Pitlochry in September with the Pitlochry
Highland Games.
