The Blair
Atholl Highland
Games
The first Highland Games of each year in
Scotland is held Games always runs on the Sunday of the last
Bank Holiday weekend in May in
Blair
Atholl, called the 'Atholl Gathering'. This is a lovely little
games, not commercialised, very much a 'locals' Highland Games,
with all local stall holders displaying their wares and full of
chat
and
camaraderie throughout the site.
The Duke of Atholl opens the games with an
ancient ceremony using his sword. The other major draw to
the Games is the appearance of the Atholl Highlanders, who
march
on to the games field behind their magnificent pipes and drums
followed by their field gun. The field gun is fired to signify
the opening of the games. It lets off an almighty bang!
The games field has an excellent natural
gallery in the form of a mound or steep bank in which many spectators can sit
and enjoy the performances taking place on the games field below
them.
These
few images are just a taster to encourage you to come to a
Highland Games in Highland Perthshire. If you have a kilt you
won't be out of place wearing it
as
many people are dressed in Highland dress.
Here are one or two more photos which we
hope you will enjoy!
